Resources for Nutrition Graduates

Written by Alice Goudie

After struggling to find a job out of uni and spending a few years on the job search to find the right role – I know just how tough it is out there at the moment! Even though I have been lucky enough to remain employed since leaving uni, a full career history certainly doesn’t mean its been a smooth ride…

In the second half of 2019, I decided the time was right to start supporting individuals 1-1. I had gained a good amount of experience working for a manufacturer, corporate caterer, hospitality company, within employee wellbeing and other CPD to be confident enough in my nutrition knowledge. I began working all hours around my 40-50h/week chef role, to start building my own business from the ground up. I’ve heard it referred to at the 5-10pm job recently and this couldn’t be more true!

Over the great year that was 2020, I certainly had my fair share of ups and downs with my consultancy but I managed to secure a part time Nutrition role at Jamie Oliver (delighted!) and my business was really started to take off.

I started receiving many emails from graduates asking for mentoring, support or just general advice and kept asking myself ‘why anyone would want advice from me?’ (complete imposter syndrome!). I soon realised that just sharing my experiences and learnings was so helpful for graduates and decided to start offering free Monday mentoring calls. These are one off informal chats where graduates can ask questions about nutrition careers, going freelance, running a business etc. Ive spoken to over 40 graduates in the last few months and plan to continue offering this service as my way of giving back to the industry.

If you are interested in booking in for a chat then please go to Nutrition graduate resources — Root to nutrition and submit your details in the contact form at the bottom of the page.

I also started to collate a list of helpful links and resources, as there were so many individuals who did not know about all these amazing opportunities and accounts! Please check them out here: Nutrition graduate resources and if you have any more to add to the list then please do let me know! Please note: I am currently at full capacity for formal mentoring but will be opening up some more spaces in 6-12 months’ time.
