Carnivore, keto, lectins, biohacks, and countless others… What should we believe, who can we trust? How can we sharpen our skills to discern misleading claims? In an era where information is as accessible as it is abundant, the health and nutrition space has become a breeding ground for misinformation – celebrity diets, risky hearsay, and faddy theories. Research has shown that falsehoods are 70%more likely to be shared than the truth, affecting how misinformation can mislead people into making poor choices for their health.

This special guest webinar featuring Alex Ruani, UCL Doctoral Researcher and Chief Science Educator of The Health Sciences Academy, aims to equip you with the steps needed to peel back layers of myths and how to reveal the truth beneath current fad diets, unsupported health claims, and the often contradictory advice peddled by self-appointed health gurus. Alex will also delve into advanced strategies for navigating the scientific evidence methodically and techniques to use when encountering contradicting advice.

Alex Ruani is a Doctoral Researcher in nutrition science education at University College London and Chief Science Educator at The Health Sciences Academy since 2012, where she heads a team of PhDs and accomplished science educators on large education and publishing projects helping over 100,000 working and aspiring nutrition professionals succeed in their careers. She has led the curriculum design and content for ~20 professional certifications, directed the production of 70+ continuing education courses, and authored 50+ science books and reports debiasing misinformed beliefs on diet and nutrition. She is a Food Matters Live Trainer on Careers in Nutrition, Lead Instructor of the Behavioural Coaching Skills Program (ICF accredited) at The Health Sciences Academy, and an NBC-HWC credentialed coach adhering to the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) code of ethics (examination with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) in 2021). Her current research primarily focuses on nutrition misinformation susceptibility, discernment, and subsequent eating behaviour change, online and offline information seeking, sources use for dietary advice, and their assigned trustworthiness, alongside the development of educational tools for misinformation debiasing and inoculation. She is also interested in understanding people’s attitudes, views, and intentions surrounding diet and planetary health. Alex is regularly featured in mainstream media making sense of conflicting dietary advice and debunking the latest myths, including the BBC, The Telegraph, and The Times. Additionally, Alex is an active member of the World Health Organization’s Fides initiative, working to combat nutrition-health misinformation globally.
